Background
As one of the world's leading suppliers of drive and control technologies, Bosch Rexroth equips machines and systems of any size. With its intelligent components, customized system solutions, engineering and services, the company creates the environment needed for fully connected applications: hydraulics, electric drive and control technology, gear technology, linear motion and assembly technology, including software and interfaces to the Internet of Things. Present in more than 80 countries, the group generated sales revenue of 7.6 billion euros in 2023 with around 33,800 associates.
A flexible telematics solution
BODAS Connect meets the diverse needs of the off-highway vehicle market with customizable telematics, tailored to different user roles — operations managers, service technicians, engineers. What sets it apart is its flexibility: users choose their hardware, software and partners according to their needs.
- Customizable telematics: tailored to market needs and to each user's role.
- Open connectivity: users can choose or integrate third-party solutions.
- Edge computing with IP protection: developers create and deploy their own applications without exposing their know-how.
- Flexible data management: vehicle data can be uploaded to multiple cloud endpoints, with fully customizable dashboards.
- Ready-made professional front ends for fleet management and vehicle services.
- Customizable data pipelines: users retrieve, combine and generate the data they need.
The role of the Owasys hardware
The capabilities of BODAS Connect rest on the owa4X and owa5X units, which form its backbone. The partnership between Bosch Rexroth and Owasys is the foundation of the solution:
- Scalability: the two units offer different levels of processing power and memory, which makes it possible to offer solutions sized to varying needs and budgets.
- Rugged design: IP67 enclosures, with the owa5X going as far as IP6K9K — essential in the harsh environments in which these vehicles operate.
- Connectivity options: CAN bus, WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, to cover the requirements of today's telematics systems.
- Processing power: the quad-core processor of the owa5X supports edge computing and running a full Linux operating system, and therefore the development of custom applications.
- Flexibility and reliability: the choice between owa4X and owa5X allows the solution to be matched to each customer's requirements and price point, on industrial-grade hardware.
“The partnership with Owasys is not just about providing a product: it's about empowering customers with the tools they need to innovate and succeed in an increasingly connected world. As the off-highway vehicle industry continues to embrace digital transformation, solutions like BODAS Connect, built on reliable hardware platforms, will play a crucial role. We selected Owasys due to its impressive track record of more than twenty years of Linux-based connectivity unit development.”
The result
Manufacturers that adopt BODAS Connect get a ready-to-use solution — deploying the telematics hardware on a machine and seeing the data online takes a few minutes — yet fully customizable, down to running their own business logic on the on-board unit. Software updates are performed over the air, for different ECU types and across entire fleets.
